Composer note:
Although Hymnset does not necessarily have to be performed as a whole — the only specific connection between the four movements is the early American origin of each tune — the work is particularly effective as a four-movement suite. The source of the tunes is a book of American hymns dating from the approximate time of the War of Independence and shortly thereafter, edited by Richard F. Goldman. Each of the four settings reflects the composer’s feeling about the text as well as the nature of the particular tune.
