Programme Note

Jonathan Dove’s In Exile is a 30-minute work for baritone, violoncello and orchestra, with texts on belonging and exile spanning The Wayfarer, Dante, Emily Lawless, Khalil Gibran, Shakespeare, Kaveh Bassiri and Douglas Hyde, compiled by Alasdair Middleton.

In Exile was commissioned by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra as one of its Centenary Commissions, with funds generously provided by the Rachel Baker Memorial Charity. It was premiered by Simon Keenlyside, Raphael Wallfisch and the State Philharmonic Orchestra of Bacau, conducted by Jessica Cottis, on 3 September 2021 at the George Enescu Festival, Bucharest. It received its UK premiere with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra on 9 December 2021.
