|On March 31, Carol Wincenc and the Juilliard String Quartet premiere Joan Tower's new work for flute and string quartet, Rising, at the Peter J. Sharp Auditorium of The Juilliard School. The performance is part of a series of concerts in which celebrated flutist Carol Wincenc commemorates the fortieth year of her illustrious performance career.|
This "Ruby Anniversary Series" spans three concerts between November 2009 and March 2010 showcasing six world premieres and many gems of the contemporary flute repertoire.
Having laid the groundwork for this series while recovering from debilitating injuries she received as a result of a 2007 car accident, Wincenc aims to celebrate life, to pay tribute to all the wonderful collaborations she has been a part of, to honor her incredible teaching experiences, and to cherish the beautiful music she has premiered throughout her career. Commissioning new works and working directly with composers has been a large and joyful part of Wincenc's professional life. For this celebration, she has specifically chosen composers with whom she feels a particular personal and musical affinity. For Wincenc, these composers offer music that sings — and as she states, "music I feel compelled to sing back." Given the body of work that Wincenc has commissioned over four decades, the composers with whom she has collaborated, and a distinguished career that is truly an inspiration to all performers, Wincenc deserves to be celebrated. Happy Anniversary, Carol!
