News - Tan Dun: Piano Concerto

Beowulf Sheehan
Saturday, March 1, 2008
There is a very special bond between Tan Dun and pianist Lang Lang — for Lang Lang, they are “like brothers.” After meeting seven years ago in New York, the two musicians have collaborated on several projects including the film score to the Chinese-language movie, “The Banquet,” and on revisions to Tan Dun’s solo piano score, Eight Memories in Watercolor.

Their latest collaboration, to be premiered by the New York Philharmonic and Leonard Slatkin on 9 April, is a piano concerto described by Lang Lang as “very melodic, very rhythmic, and very dramatic.” Given the power of this new work, Lang Lang is certain the concerto will appeal to a large audience, particularly, as this 25 year-old virtuoso puts it, “to the younger generation.”
