Now in his 85th year, composer John Corigliano continues to produce new scores of striking vibrancy and emotional potency. On January 13-14, cellist Sterling Elliott debuts a new cello concerto with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Eric Jacobsen. Commissioned by the Orlando Philharmonic, Phantasmagoria, for violoncello and orchestra expands on material from two Corigliano scores of the same name written in the 1990s. Mirroring in microcosm Corigliano’s groundbreaking 1991 opera The Ghosts of Versailles, Phantasmagoria now takes flight as a cello concerto especially composed for Sterling Elliott, who was the recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2021.
Prior to this world premiere, Corigliano travels to Nashville to reunite with Giancarlo Guerrero and the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, for performances of his 2011 song cycle One Sweet Morning January 5-7. These performances feature acclaimed mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke, who previously performed the work in 2012 with the Shanghai Symphony. One Sweet Morning is a four-movement song cycle on texts by Czeslaw Milosz, Homer, Li Po, and E. Y. Harburg that reflects on the presence of war, its anguishes throughout history, and ends with the dream of a world without it. These Nashville performances will be recorded for future commercial release, on an all-Corigliano NAXOS album that also features Triathlon, a concerto for saxophonist and orchestra that was recorded by the Nashville Symphony, Guerrero, and soloist Timonthy McAllister in 2023.
On February 6th, a new band arrangement of Triathlon debuts with the Dallas Winds and Timothy McAllister, under the direction of Jerry Junkin. This arrangement is commissioned by the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Missouri at Kansas City, and the Dallas Winds.
