News - The English National Opera 2018/2019

Thursday, May 17, 2018
The English National Opera has launched their 18/19 Season which includes two Music Sales titles: a revival of Akhnaten by Philip Glass and a world premiere of Jack the Ripper: The Women of Whitechapel by Iain Bell.

Following its sell-out run in 2016, Akhnaten (1983) by Philip Glass will see its revival next year at the ENO, running from 11 February to 7 March 2019. It follows the rise, reign and fall of the Pharaoh Akhnaten (a countertenor, sung by Anthony Roth Costanzo). The opera will be conducted by Karen Kamensek following the ENO-revival of Glass’ Satyagraha in 2018.

Jack the Ripper: The Women of Whitechapel by Iain Bell will see its world premiere next year, running from 30 March to 12 April 2019. The opera explores a disadvantaged community of working-class women, struggling against the terror that haunts London’s East End in 1888. The cast includes some of UK’s finest singers such as Dame Josephine Barstow, Susan Bullock, Lesley Garrett and Alan Opie conducted by ENO Music Director Martyn Brabbins. Jack the Ripper is commissioned by the ENO and Opera North, and will be directed by ENO Artistic Director Daniel Kramer.
