He has won the Royal Opera House Fanfare Competition, the Aldeburgh Music Friday Afternoons Songwriting Competition and the BBC Proms Inspire Competition. He has also been commissioned by the King’s Lynn Festival for the Manchester-based Solem Quartet and the BBC for the NYCGB Fellowship Octet in association with the Wellcome Collection. He has been a composer member of Britten Sinfonia Academy since 2016, having played with them since 2014, and with the National Youth Orchestra from 2016.

Chris Butler, Head of Publishing at the Music Sales Group, says: 'I am delighted to announce that Morgan Overton is the inaugural recipient of the Chester Fellowship for Young Composers. He is an exceptional musician and we hope that this award together with our continued support will assist Morgan in the next phase of his artistic and creative development.'

Morgan Overton comments: 'I am honoured and thrilled to be the first recipient of the Chester Fellowship for Young Composers. I am excited for what the fellowship will hold for me, and I am looking forward to learning more about the multifaceted world of professional music, which I am sure will set me up well for a career in the field in the future.'

This Sunday October 15 at 4pm BBC Radio 3 will broadcast a live concert from the Wellcome Collection in London. It will feature the premiere of I’m Making a Statement by Morgan Overton. The new five-movement work scored for voices and synthesised backing track will be performed by the National Youth Choir Fellowship Octet.

The Chester Fellowship for Young Composers
The fellowship will be awarded to a young composer in secondary education on an annual basis and will run for a period of three years. The scheme will provide the opportunity for a young composer – alongside the development of their creative talents – to obtain a real understanding of the mechanics of the music business. During each year of the fellowship, and in addition to an annual stipend, there will be the opportunity to attend a range of concerts and events and to meet with established composers. We will also provide access to advice and guidance from experienced staff within the Music Sales Group on matters ranging from copyright administration and promotion through to editorial, marketing and digital. The fellowship will be tailored to the needs and aspirations of each fellow.
Further details concerning the application process for the 2018-19 Chester Fellowship for Young Composers will be available in the new year.
