Salonen in 2017-18
The following season is packed with big Salonen performances, especially at The Barbican who are hosting a season-long focus on the composer in 17-18. It begins on November 22 with a collaboration with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in which Salonen conducts the student orchestra in his LA Variations. On December 10, the BBC presents ‘Total Immersion: Esa-Pekka Salonen’.
From February 8-18, the Los Angeles Philharmonic performs the three Salonen concertos (cello, piano, violin) by their original soloists: Yo-Yo Ma, Yefim Bronfman and Leila Josefowicz. This will be followed by several performances of Wing on Wing. On April 13, in the USA the LA Phil and Gustavo Dudamel give the world premiere of their latest orchestral commission from Salonen which travels to the Barbican on May 2.
The Tero Saarinen Company continue their tour of Morphed in Europe and travel to Canada and America in October, visiting Ottowa, Wiliamstown, New York and Vancouver. Wayne McGregor’s striking ballet Obsidian Tear, which features Salonen's Lachen Verlernt and Nyx, returns to the Royal Opera House in April next year for a run of eight shows.
