Bernhard Lewkovitch at 90

Clear vocal lines, energy and a heartfelt openness are all characteristics of the music of Bernhard Lewkovitch for voices, often written for use in a liturgical setting.

The Danish composer, whose parents emigrated from Ukraine, is in some ways an exotic bird in Danish music life; as a catholic and an organist and choir conductor his music for the church takes up most of his catalogue. His liturgical works are being performed in churches – Protestant as well as Catholic – all over Denmark and abroad. In many ways Lewkovitch has been a true renewer and trailblazer for contemporary choral repertoire in Denmark.

His 32 Motets, Il Cantico delle creature for male choir, Improperia and Tre madrigali di Torquato Tasso are all modern classics in Danish choral repertoire in churches and concert halls. As an organist and composer, Lewkovitch has composed a many works for organ, for example his 65 Organ Chorales.

Though Lewkovitch describes his church music as his calling, he has also written a few ensemble and instrumental works for the concert hall, and all include his characteristic emotional and spiritual depth, combined with clarity and energy.

Edition Wilhelm Hansen and Music Sales wish Bernhard Lewkovitch a very Happy 90th Birthday, on May 28!
