On January 31 Philip Glass turned eighty. He is one of the world’s most successful living composers. Following the BBC's Total Immersion day in London on January 28 and the premiere of his Symphony No 11 by the Bruckner Orchester Linz on January 31, this milestone will continue to be marked worldwide by a multitude of premieres and performances. Here are the highlights for 2017…

Glass at 80
February 1-10 - CPAC, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC
Glass at 80 celebrates Glass's work and its impact on music and intellectual life through performances featuring some of his most important collaborators: Lucinda Childs, Laurie Anderson, and the Kronos Quartet

Glass Works
February 18 - BMOP, New England Conservatory, Boston, MA
The Boston Modern Orchestra Project presents Glass's Symphony No 2, and welcomes guest pianist Anton Batagov for the Tirol Concerto to salute the pioneering minimalist

National Sawdust
February 24 | March 12 - National Sawdust, Brooklyn, NY
National Sawdust will present a series of events throughout 2017, including The Complete Piano Etudes with Maki Namekawa and a special performance with Foday Musa Suso

The Perfect American
March 12, 18 - Long Beach, CA
April 22, 30 - Chigago, IL
Long Beach Opera and Chicago Opera Theater present a new production of The Perfect American directed by Kevin Newbury. Andreas Mitisek conducts this fictionalised account of Walt Disney's final days

Celebrating Philip Glass’s 80th Birthday
March 16 - Carnegie Hall, New York, NY
The annual Tibet House Benefit Concert at Carnegie Hall will be dedicated to the celebration of Glass's 80th birthday and his long association with the organisation and its acclaimed yearly event on its 30th anniversary in 2017 

La Belle et la Bête returns to New York
April 20 - The Town Hall, New York, NY
The Tribeca Film Festival and The Town Hall in association with Pomegranate Arts present a screening of Jean Cocteau's film La belle et la bête, featuring Glass's original score played live by the Philip Glass Ensemble

Symphony No 11 
April 21-22 - QPAC, South Brisbane, Australia
The Queensland Symphony Orchestra, a co-commissioner of Glass's Symphony No 11, presents its Australian premiere

Music in Twelve Parts
May 1 - The Barbican, London
Music in Twelve Parts premiered in 1974. Until now it has only ever been performed by the composer's group, the Philip Glass Ensemble. Now, in his 80th birthday year, Glass passes the baton on to a specially selected group of musicians, allowing a new generation to continue his work

The Trial
June 4-23 - St. Louis, MO
The Opera Theater of Saint Louis gives the US premiere of The Trial directed by Michael McCarthy. Based on Franz Kafka’s novel, this dark comedy comes to St. Louis after a sold-out run at London's Royal Opera House

Carnegie Composer Chair
2017-2018 Season - Carnegie Hall, New York, NY
Glass holds the Richard and Barbara Debs Composer's Chair at Carnegie Hall for the 2017-2018 season. Highlights will include performances by the Pacific Symphony Orchestra with Anoushka Shankar, the Louisiana Philharmonic, Nico Muhly, the Philip Glass Ensemble, and the American Composers Orchestra
