The opera Satyagraha by Philip Glass will be staged in two new productions this season: the first in Stockholm on September 14 2016, where contemporary Cirkus Cirkör will collaborate with Folkoperan; the second production is at Theater Basel under the direction of the dancer and choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui in April 2017.

Satyagraha is the second in Glass's trilogy concerning men who changed the world. The opera’s sub-text is political. Semi-narrative in form it deals with Mahatma Gandhi's early years in South Africa and his development of non-violent protest as a political tool. (Satyagraha is a Sanskrit word meaning 'truth force').

Opera singers and circus artists will meet on the Folkoperan stage in a space where anything can happen and the laws of gravity are suspended. The director Tilde Björfors is founder and artistic director of Cirkus Cirkör. Her previous works address subjects such as peace, borders, risks and opportunities. Her interpretation of Satyagraha further develops these themes and goes one step further in daring to believe in a peaceful path.

Satyagraha
at Theater Basel is a co-production with Komische Oper Berlin and Opera Vlaanderen in Antwerp. The ensemble consists of the orchestra and choir of the Theater Basel and dancers of the Kompanie Eastman.
