On December 6 the Semperoper Dresden will stage the European Premiere of John Harbison’s The Great Gatsby. The stage director will be Keith Warner, the Staatskapelle Dresden will be conducted by Wayne Marshall. Five further performances take place during December 2015.

Commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera and conducted by James Levine in 1999 The Great Gatsby has received numerous new productions since its premiere. The Boston Globe wrote: “Out of one national classic, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, John Harbison has fashioned another, one of the best operas composed by an American to date... It is hard to think of another American opera composed with a comparable degree of musical sophistication and sheer virtuoso compositional chops.”
