Magna Carta: A Letter of Rights by Tarik O’Regan

I was drawn in particular to the idea of poise, something which came directly from Alice's libretto. By which I mean both the extremely intricate way in which parchment was made in 1215 (and which Alice references beautifully in her text), but also the delicate nature of the very language which was written upon that parchment 800 year ago, and its subsequent interpretations. As a result, A Letter of Rights has an almost ritualistic quality to it: palindromic, divided into several text-driven movements interconnected by instrumental interludes for strings and percussion.

2015 marks the 800th anniversary of the 1215 Magna Carta, one of history’s most important legal documents and the basis of English law. The Cathedral in Salisbury is home to the finest of the four surviving original 1215 Magna Carta. Tickets priced at £50 includes entry to a reception at 6pm in the Chapter House and Cloisters, with sparkling wine and canapés. There will also be an opportunity to view the Magna Carta. The concert itself also includes music by Mozart Mozart, Elgar and Pergolesi.
