Tavener‘s Mary of Egypt UK Premiere

Tavener‘s Mary of Egypt UK Premiere
The UK premiere of the chamber version of John Tavener’s opera Mary of Egypt will be staged at King’s College Chapel, Cambridge October 29-31.

Tavener’s eldest daughter, Theodora, will direct the production alongside Gareth Mattey. Also on the team are Musical Director Philip Barrett and a cast which features some of the University’s best musical and theatrical talent.

Theodora Tavener spoke of how it felt to direct her father’s writing for the production. ‘It’s a great shame that this beautiful work has not been performed more often. The music of Mary of Egypt itself is incredibly moving – so the opportunity to work with my father’s music for his 70th birthday year is wonderful.’

Mary of Egypt is much more than an opera – it’s both a liturgical service and a ritual, which we are enhancing with incense, dance and light. You can’t fail to be captivated by the immersive experience of the music, and the chance to play it in the majestic surround of King’s College Chapel is a dream.’
