New Horovitz Recordings

On the Clarinet Classics disc Horovitz’s Clarinet Sonatina is performed by Victoria Soames Samek and pianist Michael Bell. The artists worked closely with the composer for this recording, the thirtieth for this work which has become a favourite recital piece all over the world since its premiere by Gervase de Peyer and Gwenneth Pryor at the Wigmore Hall in 1981. Other Music Sales works on this disc are Horovitz’s Opus 1, Concertante for Clarinet and Strings, played by Victoria Soames Samek with the Bingham String Quartet, and Variations on a Theme of Paganini, in its version for saxophone quartet, performed by ReedPlay.
For the Chandos disc “The Symphonic Euphonium”, soloist David Childs has recorded Horovitz’s Euphonium Concerto with Bramwell Tovey conducting the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Commissioned by the National Brass Band Festival and premiered at the Royal Albert Hall in 1972, it was the first ever concerto for the instrument. Versions for wind band and chamber orchestra soon followed. David Childs, son and grandson of euphonium players and one of the finest brass players of his generation says of the concerto: “I remember as a boy hearing the work for the first time, performed by my father and the Black Dyke Mills Band. My father’s performance made a lasting impression on me. It was the most beautiful original euphonium music I had ever heard and today I feel the same way about it. “
