WORLD PREMIERE of John Tavener’s Three Shakespeare Sonnets as part of Curated Place Collaborative Compositions
Performed by The South Iceland Chamber Choir
Friday 15 November, Southwark Cathedral, London www.curatedplace.com
Innovative producers Curated Place bring two world premieres to London; one a new work by Sir John Tavener, the other a new commission from Jack White as part of their residency programme Collaborative Commissions with Sound and Music and the South Iceland Chamber Choir.Celebrating landscape and literature in Shakespeare’s own Parish Church, this is a unique opportunity to experience Tavener’s latest masterpiece performed by a choir handpicked by the composer himself. The South Iceland Chamber Choir (SICC), whose patron is Bjork, have a longstanding relationship with Sir John Tavener. In 2004 they gave the first complete concert of the composer’s works in Iceland which included the premiere of Schuon Hymnen commissioned by the choir. In 2010 Tavener made his first visit to Iceland to attend the launch concert for Iepo Oneipo, also by SICC, whose recording received rave reviews in the UK and Iceland. Tracks from this work will be performed as part of this concert, with Gudrun Johanna Olafsdottir as soloist, making this special event the next step of a close collaboration between the choir and composer.Through their new international residency programme Collaborative Compositions, Curated Place have created the opportunity for UK composer Jack White to premiere a new work alongside Sir John Tavener. White will undertake three residencies; the first in Manchester with choirmaster Hilmar Örn Agnarsson, and the second and third in Reykjavik, Iceland working closely with the SICC. Through creating opportunities for both White and the SICC to trial new ideas Curated Place hope to develop lasting opportunities for performances in both countries and throughout Europe.Curated Place is delighted to be working with partners Arts Council England and Sound and Music on this project.
