News - US premiere of DESH

Monday, November 4, 2013

London based choreographer/dancer Akram Khan will dance the U.S. premiere of his acclaimed solo DESH, with score by Jocelyn Pook. This will take place on November 6 and 7 in the Rose Theater, Jazz at Lincoln Center. Khan created DESH (Bengali for “homeland”) in 2011. Featuring intricate scenic elements by Tim Yip, the designer for Ang Lee’s award-winning Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Khan mines his relationship with his father and his Bangladeshi heritage as jumping off points to explore universal themes of childhood and memory and the search to know oneself.

Jocelyn Pook composed DESH to accompany Akram Khan's theatre work of the same name. For the score, Jocelyn Pook combined field recordings she made in Bangladesh with hymns, chants and the rhythm of urban chaos. The music translates into sound the sights, energy and colour Pook experienced into fragile pieces scored for chamber ensemble as well as pieces harnessing the power of full orchestra. Singers from around the world complete the score The Times called, “haunting and magical, excited and angry.”
