40th edition of the Kilkenny Arts Festival in Kilkenny, Ireland
presents the inimitable powerhouse Crash Ensemble in the world premiere of Michael Gordon's newest work for large ensemble, Dry, commissioned by the Kilkenny Arts Council.
follows Gordon's 2012 commission,
, for Ensemble Modern, a work that underscores his unique voice and masterful control of rhythm, timbre and texture. In
, Gordon pushes the traditional sound of the ensemble to create a stark, harrowing terrain. A review of Ensemble Modern's premiere recounts Gordon's skill at manipulating sound:
"Micromotions accumulate into larger rhythmic forms, begin pulsing in ever changing colors, gain psychedelic volume, cool off, frost over, virtually shimmer an icy blue when figures, cut sharp and crisp like the marks left by the blades of ice skates, slide over the subtly swirling mass of sound."
