World Premiere: Poul Ruders’ Sonatas

Photo by Suste BonnénOn June 1, the Danish National Symphony Orchestra (principal orchestra of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation) premieres their commissioned work Sonatas by Danish composer Poul Ruders. An undogmatic take on the sonata form usually associated with Mozart or Beethoven, the sonatas here are transformed into a dramatic six piece suite for large wind ensemble, percussion, piano and harp.

Last year saw the release of Ruders’ work Songs and Rhapsodies (Bridge records) — a suite of 12 playful and profound movements strikingly anticipating Sonatas — which the FrontRow blog labeled ”one of the most interesting new chamber works of recent years.” And indeed, the coupling of Ruders' inventive genius and the world-class wind section of the DNSO should make Sonatas a true delight.

Come autumn, Ruders will continue his collaboration with the Danish Broadcasting Corporation as he has been asked by the Danish National Vocal Ensemble to write new music to the prologue to Purcell’s opera classic Dido and Aeneas. The prologue’s original score being lost to history, this is a chance for Ruders to repay a long-standing debt to the composer partly responsible for his international breakthrough, which came in 1995 with a set of variations on a theme by Purcell (Concerto in Pieces) written for the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
