During worldwide centenary celebrations for
Gian Carlo Menotti
, the Spoleto Festival in Italy hosted
INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM GIAN CARLO MENOTTI
, two unique days of exploration into the composer's world on July 6 and 7 (his actual birthday). Interdisciplinary scholars from around the world gathered in the name of Menotti to investigate his artistic production, aesthetic design, cultural identity, relationships with the press, and his work as a director of plays and operas. This International symposium was unprecedented for an artist who has been neglected by research.
Between July 3-10,
(also known as "Piccola Spoleto") celebrated Menotti's 100th birthday in his hometown with performances of orchestral works, chamber music, and songs alongside a fully-staged production of
. "Una Vita per Due Mondi," a new music theater work with live orchestra and a score created from works by Menotti and Samuel Barber, premiered on July 7. This "multimedia storytelling opera" was created by and featured actress Silvia Priori, artistic director of the festival, and soprano Francesca Cappelletti in a production by Teatro Blu. Several of the events took place in Menotti's childhood home, the Villa Menotti.
