Ten years have passed since the momentous atrocity committed upon the United States in September 2001. To mark the event two large-scale works by Music Sales composers have been commissioned to meditate on the legacy of that date, its place in the history of war and suffering, and what the future may hold for those affected.

John Corigliano’s One Sweet Morning will receive its world premiere on September 30 by mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe and the music director Alan Gilbert. The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra co-commissioned the piece with the New York Philharmonic and will present their performances with mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke and conductor Lan Shui on May 26 2012.

In August Mexico City is the venue for an exhibition of films and photos which opens at Museo Universitario del Chopo on August 24. Poul Ruders newest opera Selma Jezková – based on the story of Lars von Trier’s Dancer in the Dark – gets its US premiere at the Lincoln Center Festival on July 29. It is the breathtaking, evocative, emotional, and epic tale of a factory worker with failing sight who sacrifices her life so her son can see.

Weir
Miss Fortune

The opera Achterbahn (Miss Fortune) by Judith Weir is the first in a series of newly commissioned operas to be performed at the Festspielhaus in Bregenz this summer. The opera is jointly commissioned and co-produced by the Bregenz Festival and the Royal Opera, Covent Garden and premieres on July 21.
