Kevin Volans celebrates his sixtieth birthday in July this year. Volans’ musical idiom has been shaped by an unusually diverse range of influences, including studies with Stockhausen in Cologne, field trips to Africa to study traditional music, his own involvement with the ‘New Simplicity’ movement and a love of virtuoso piano music which he per forms, broadcasts and records. Volans’ music resists compartmentalisation and he is as comfortable working in conventional genres as embarking on innovative collaborations with artists of other disciplines, particularly visual artists. It is therefore wholly appropriate that a concert to celebrate his birthday is being held in the Irish Museum of Modern Art. A further concert on July 5 includes Cautiva by Alberto Iglesias, whose music Volans admires enormously.
