Reviews

The numinous music of Peter Lieberson is the subject of this new release from Bridge Records. Bright, emotional and unreserved, Lieberson’s compositions – beginning with Leviathan, the opening movement of Piano Concerto No. 3 – are aural morsels of delight. Lieberson’s neo-romantic expressionism runs the gamut, suggestion joy, apprehension, love, doom and death in a dramatic onslaught of musical brilliance. For listeners, there is rarely a moment of repose to be found, so that even the gentler passages of the final movement serve to contrast the incendiary expression that concludes the concerto’s rondo. In contrast, the viola concerto also contains its share of highly animated – even explosive passages – but the overall effect is different in the solo sections. Here, instrumentalist Roberto Diaz initiates an impassioned musical exchange with the players of the Odense Symphony Orchestra. These conversations yield moments of real artistic transcendence, like those found in the final passages of the concerto’s opening Rhapsody movement, as well as the frenzied playing that ends the piece. Bold and beautiful.
