The Vanishing Bridegroom
BBC Symphony Orchestra and Singers
"Musically, Weir's melodic and vocal style owes much to Benjamin Britten. The writing is approachable and dramatically effective"
"The final act presents some of the folksier music on the disc, and the orchestral textures and colours are probably the most fascinating of the whole recording. Urgent scratching on violins and icy woodwind, with popping brass and sparkling percussion, evoke a strange magic as the devilish stranger beguiles the daughter with spells and gold. Later, the orchestra surges as the devil tries to overcome the steadfast daughter, who spurns his advances with an exciting accompaniment steered by bouncing timpani."
