Reviews

This is a welcome reissue of the work that Tavener wrote for the cellist Steven Isserlis in 1987 which was first released in 1992, just as Classic FM was launched, and immediately became a big hit in the classical charts. The inspiration for the piece came from the Eastern orthodox 'Feast of the Protecting Veil of the Mother of God', which commemorates the Virgin's appearance in a church at Constantinople in the early 10th century. At the time this was a departure from Tavener's vocal works, but its success has led to other collaborations with isserlis- and long may they continue.
