London Philharmonic Orchestra
Sir Georg Solti / Bernard Haitink
Whatever else might be said of them, these are three superbly effective display pieces for large orchestra, and they receive stunningly flamboyant accounts with the LPO, Bernard Haitink and Georg Solti all on top form...The works complement each other in intriguing ways: the 12 colourful variants of McCabe's comparatively well-known Chagall Windows group into four ternary-form movements, giving the piece a quasi-symphonic feeling, while the five movements of his Concerto for Orchestra articulate a continuous underpinning process of passacaglia variations...The brilliance of both composers' instrumental scoring is matched by the sheer brilliance of the LPO's playing, and collectors of Haitink and Solti should certainly hear them in this (on the face of it) unlikely repertoire.

Heard 26 years on, this account sounds as fresh as when it was first unveiled.
