Frederick Thurston (clarinet), Griller Quartet
Thurston was one of the finest orchestral players of his generation, and his artistry can be heard on many recordings made during the quarter century that the Grillers were at their peak; although a magnificent chamber musician as well, he made relatively few recordings in that genre, but among them is the earliest on this CD, Bliss's Clarinet Quintet, which was of course the first of this splendid composition to have been made.
These outstanding performances by great artists of the past should be studied by every clarinettist, [and] by every admirer of Bliss's music.
Robert Matthew-Walker, International Record Review, 4/1/2005
Strong, purposeful performances ... recorded in wartime in single takes and never previously issued.
