Programme Note

My Double Concerto for oboe, harp and chamber orchestra was commissioned by Paul Sacher, who always had the Holligers in mind to perform it. The prospect of the piece being given by Paul Sacher and the Collegium Musicum with such famous virtuoso soloists was a great inspiration to me while I was working on the Concerto.

The music is multi-faceted and just when it seems to be saying one thing, it is saying something else at the same time – sometimes in contradiction. The titles of the movements – Rapsodico, Dolente, Marchiale e grotesco are only to be taken figuratively.

The first performance of Double Concerto took place on 24 August 1980 at the Lucerne Festival.
