Phillip Cooke Invocation is a dreamlike setting of Edward Thomas's famous poem Adlestrop, dripping with nostalgia for the soft countryside of pre-1914 Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire. The setting is for SATB divisi, singing in long, sustained, soft phrases. The verses are interspersed with interludes in free rhythm for B flat trumpet (a separate trumpet part is provided) and, at the end, a wordless off-stage soprano solo evoking Thomas's blackbird, fades into the distance. A beautifully atmospheric piece.
Alan Speding, Organists' Review,3/1/2012
Memorably haunting, requiring the services of a straight-toned soprano at the end. This piece is spine-tingling...
