Reviews
And by the mid-point of this recital at St John's Church, Wolverhampton – as Orton and pianist Magdalena Nasidlak strummed and shrieked their way through Edward Gregson's Aztec Dances – everyone present was doing a double-take. This was a piece, and a performance, that smashed prejudices to smithereens – not just about the recorder. Nothing this writer has heard by Edward Gregson was any preparation for these four ferocious miniatures, performed with stunning bravura by Orton and Nasidlak. Gregson has seized on the unrefined, almost primitive quality of recorder tone and pushed it to its limits. Ominous thunder rose from the piano as Nasidlak played; the recorder's piercing flourishes were like the cry of some cruel eagle-headed god. No-one who heard this performance is ever again likely to think of recorder music as kids' stuff. Aztec Dances would be a tough act to follow in any concert, and nothing else was quite as spectacular.
