Programme Note

Shostakovich composed his 'Quintet for piano and strings in G minor, op.57' in 1940 at the request of the Beethoven Quartet which premiered it in November 1940 at the Moscow Conservatory with the composer at the piano. Shostakovich, although censored in previous years by the Soviet authorities, received the Stalin Prize for this quintet.
