Nico Muhly You Could Have Asked Me (2004)
You Could Have Asked Me is, at its heart, about passing information along through a network of friends. For the first two thirds of the piece, the instruments all arpeggiate around a series of chords without ever fully articulating them. At a certain point, everything locks together into a forceful chorale – only after several minutes of awkward rhythmic shifts, high, whining viola and cello solo passages, and a relentless series of ostinato figures. In that this piece was written for a festival setting and I wanted to make a bolder statement than usual, the section immediately before the coda is a slightly sassy exploration of minimal processes. You Could Have Asked Me is dedicated to Chris Kim and the Brave New Works ensemble and was written in March-May 2004.
