Programme Note

Composer note:

The piece is an outgrowth of the third section of my Duo for violin and cello of 1988. Obviously, there was more involved than simply adapting the cello part for the left hand and the violin part for the right. For one thing, the piano uses the fingers quite differently than the cello and violin do. As I took account of this, the piece began to demand different harmonies, which created their own new events. Also, I revised and incorporated materials from the second movement of the Duo. Although there are passages that are almost the same, the general identity of the work is quite different. It’s taken on a new personality.
