Programme Note
I wrote Nine Beginnings on and off between 1976 and 1979 in Cologne. My aim (along with friends like Walter Zimmerman and Michael von Biel) was to restore and explore the 'middle register' of music in all parameters: eg tempo, rhythm, pitch, duration and dynamics. The result was labelled 'The New Simplicity' and provoked violent critical reaction. Accusations of 'musical devolution' with hints of Third Reich-style anti-intellectualism were hurled at pieces like Zimmerman’s Beginner’s Mind - a surprising response to pieces that today seem so innocuous.
