Summary

Leevi Madetoja is a composer whose music is enriched by, and extends, the legacy of Sibelius, whom he studied for four years until 1910. From an early age he was inspired by the folk music of his native Ostrobothnia in western Finland, however, following successive periods of study in Paris,Vienna and Berlin, his compositions were also greatly influenced by international musical trends, especially French music, from the start of the century. 

Madetoja composed in a variety of genres and is now equally respected for both his orchestral and vocal music. His most famous works include the opera Österbottningar ("The Ostrobothnians”), which is regarded as the Finnish national opera, and Kuoleman Puuterha ("The Garden of Death”).
