Biography
Knowns as ‘The Strauss of the North’, H.C. Lumbye composed over 700 galops, polkas, waltzes and mazurkas.
Mostly known for his Champagnegaloppen (1845), Lumbye har also composed Københavns Jernbane-Damp-Galop (1847) and Columbine (1862).
Son of a military man, Lumbye moved around a lot growing up, from Copenhagen, to Randers, to Odense where he learned to play the trumpet. At the age of 14 he started playing with the military and began composing songs and marches. He moved to Copenhagen in 1829, where he became trumpeter for the Horse Guards and where he continued to compose.
