Programme Note

L’Horloge
For soprano, Clarinet, and Piano

Sometimes a beautiful poem is best left alone in its self sufficiency without the addition of music: but it seemed to me that this deeply moving poem of Charles Baudelaire would be enhanced by a musical setting. Thus I have tried to suggest (by the muffled ticking of a clock, for instance) the inexorable passage of time, and the constant tyranny of the clock over all the affairs of men till they end in death.

''Remember! Souviens toi! Esto memor!''

And finally:

''Il est trop tard.''
