Programme Note

The concept of Echoes through time received its initial impetus from Thea Musgrave’s wish to base the Centennial celebration commission for Agnes Scott College on correspondence between mothers and daughters. This felicitous idea was modified when voluminous research yielded few appropriate letters but a great deal of critical, literary, and biographical material on the subject of the mother-daughter connection in general. I decided not to use specific, individual correspondences but to seek to create instead a portrait of the relationship as it has existed and continues to endure through the ages and across cultures.

Structurally, the piece is patterned after the human life-span itself, lending architectural emphasis to the emotional and spiritual building blocks that carry the basic themes – of growth and development, of generational conflict and its resolution, of mutual commitment and responsibility
