Dave Heath The Frontier (1989)
The Frontier is loosely based upon feelings returning from a visit to New York City in 1989, and incorporates images from the visit: the view through the haze while flying into the city, the feelings of being overpowered by it size, energy and weirdness, the memory of a drunken violinist’s scratchings while trying to play an Irish jig, and a general sense of paranoia, as if in a constantly altered state of consciousness. The city’s streets are the ‘frontier’ of the title, and the style of the music comes from the city’s music, both in its quieter and funkier moods. The piece itself has a slow-fast-slow form.
