Programme Note
Stuart MacRae The Brocken Spectre (1996)
The Brocken Spectre is a phenomenon sometimes seen on high mountains, usually early in the morning or late at night, when the sun casts a shadow of the observer on a bank of cloud, producing a huge projection surrounded by rainbow-like bands; it takes its name from the Brocken in the Harz mountains of Germany, where it was first noted.

I had written the piece before I heard this term, but it seemed to me to reflect (pun intended!) the nature of the piece; also the piece is in a sense a projection of my own personal situation at the time of its writing.
