        Programme Note

        This work arises from my interest in the work of Gerald Berners (1883-195), who was remarkable as composer, writer, painter and wit. Surrealist Landscape is the third recent piece of mine to employ tape playback during a performance. The first was Recorder Music, for David Munrow, and the second Hymns, Blues and Improvisations, for string quartet, piano and tape. The tape provides an extra dimension, allowing the performers to appear alongside themselves. The recording contains performances of a simple, tonal, setting of Lord Berners' poem of the kind he might have made himself. The live music superimposes difference versions of the song, free melisma in the solo voice and chords inside and outside the piano, making a counterpoint of independent strands.
