Programme Note
The text is from the Bible, as the New King James Version of 1982: Eccl. 1: 2-11 and 1 Cor. 13: 8-13. Also some words and lines of these fragments from the official Latin Vulgata have been used.
For the most part, the choir has been handled as a six-part ensemble: SSATBB.
The saxophone quartet consists of four different instruments: soprano in B flat, alto in E flat, tenor in B flat and barytoni in E flat. The score, however, has been written in C.
The piece is in one continuous movement, and the duration is appr. 22 minutes.

“Vanity of vanities; vanity of vanities, all is vanity.” “Vanitas vanitatum; vanitas vanitatum et omnia vanitas.”
What profit has a man from all his labour
in which he toils under the sun?
One generation passes away, and another generetion comes;
but the earth abides forever.
The sun also risos, and the sun ges down,
and hastens to the place where it arose.
The wind goes toward the south,
and turns around to the north;
the wind whirls about continually,
and comes again on its circuit.
All the rivers run into the sea,
yet the sea is not full;
to the place from which the rivers come,
there they return again.
All things are full of labour;
man cannot express it.
The eye is not satisfied with seeing,
nor the ear filled with hearing.
That which has been is what will be,
that which is done is what will be done,
and there is nothing new under the sun.
Is there anything of which it may be said:
“See, this is new?”
It has already been in ancient times before us.
There is no remembrance of things that are to come
by those who will come ofter.
(Eccl. 1: 2-11)
Facie ad faciem.
Love never fails. But whether there are prophesies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will
cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.
For we know in part and we prophesy in part.
But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.
When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became
a man, I put away childish things. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face.
Facie ad faciem.
Now I know
in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.
And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
