Programme Note

This piece was commissioned by Yle (the Finnish Broadcasting Company).

It was written in memoriam Erik Bergman, the Grand Old Man of Finnish contemporary music, who passed away on April 24, 2006. The first performance took place in the Temppeliaukio Church in Helsinki, by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Hannu Lintu, on November 24, 2006, the composer’s 50th birthday, which also would have been Erik Bergman’s 95th.

A couple of fragments from Bergman’s works have been quoted and used as material for this piece. These include a double melody (originally for soprano and alto flute, with the text “jag hör det ständigt”) from the opera Det sjunganda trädet and a sequence of chords from the piano piece Á propos de BACH. Also a passage from the Jouni Kaipainen’s Requiem Des Flusses Stimme has been reshaped and arranged for this music; in its original form the passage has a text by Solveig von Schoultz, Bergman’s wife from 1961 to her death in 1996.
