Programme Note

My fourth string quartet dates from June 1994. It was commissioned by the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival, and its premiere took place at that festival, 21st July, 1994, played my Mi-kyung Lee, Jukka Pohjola, Esa Xamu and Lea Pekkala.

The quartet is in two movements, which differ from each other not only by character but also by principle of construction: the first movement is mostly polyphonic, while the second movement takes homophonic structures as its basis. The atmosphere of the 1st movement changes from immaterial, ethereal moods to strongly developing canon-like arches and back again. The very ending shows something completely different, yet the music here, also, comes from the same sources as everything else in the movement. The second movement is, as quite often in my music, a combination of music-types which normally belong to different movements; in this case, elements of a scherzo and a slow movement are put together. In fact, the last appearance of the slow element grows to something that might be called “a movement inside a movement”.
