Programme Note
Gaudy Pageant is, as the title suggests, a multi-coloured procession of Danish children tunes in many different guises. Sometimes dressed up unrecognisably, sometimes crystal-clear. But the tunes are always rather stubbornly marching in their own tempo, apparently stopping and starting at will. One tune in particular likes to expose itself in several tempi at the same time, in a rather exhibitionistic fashion. The piece falls in four continuous movements about two minutes each, (Allegrino, Scherzino, Adagietto and Finaletto) all of them building on exactly the same nursery-material. The piece is not easy to conduct.
