Programme Note

The inspiration behind the pieces in this collection has come in many shapes and forms. In the autumn of 2005, I moved to the Norfolk coast, and the expansive skies and constantly changing light have certainly played their part. So, too, have my Christian faith and the individuals with whom I share my daily life. My passion for English literature and poetry accounts, to some extent, for the lyrical nature of many of the pieces, though I have often been reminded that the piano really does ask to sing as an instrument. As a result, some of the pieces are in effect ‘songs without words’.
Patrick Hawes

Towards the Light for solo piano consists of the following individual pieces:

Towards the Light
Serenitas
Arioso
My Beloved Spake
Ave Maria
Ebb Tide
Stargazer
Song of Innocence
Sleep Song
The Time of Sacrifice
Waltz
The Gift

Over the past few years, Patrick Hawes has emerged as one of the most popular contemporary English composers. Within weeks of its release in 2004, his debut album Blue in Blue stormed the classical charts and was made CD of the week on Classic FM. Subsequently, it was voted the fastest and highest new entry into the Hall of Fame by the Classic FM audience. As Classic FM’s Composer in Residence for 2006/7, he was commissioned to write the twelve Towards the Light piano pieces that appear in the collection book NOV956659. And there are four extras, three of them piano arrangements of earlier works by Hawes: Pavane, from the film The Incredible Mrs. Ritchie, Quanta Qualia and Reflexionem featured in their original form on the album Blue in Blue, and Annunciation from the recent Classic FM double-CD release The Quiet Room. Towards the Light can be heard on Classic FM CD.
