Each variation should end with a ritard, and a very short pause before the next variation. Since each page is progressively more demanding, beginning groups may present the theme and variations 1 & 2, adding the others as they progress.
Performance indications are intentionally few. The performers are expected to add nuances, perhaps playing the repeats at differing dynamic levels. Though cresc. and dim. are seldom written, they are not out of place when the expressive intent of the piece is well understood.
