Programme Note

Nocturne, was composed at the end of 1988, and presented as a New Year’s gift to the Saturday Brass Quintet.

Nocturne is the second collaboration between John Harbison and the SBQ. Magnum Mysterium, the initial collaboration, was commissioned and premiered by the Saturday Brass Quintet this past January in Merkin Concert Hall. Nocturne, flowing and hauntingly melodic, is a brief antiphonal work for brass quintet. The piece pairs off the two trumpets on one side, the trombone and horn on the other side, and the tuba plays along in the rear of the hall.
