Programme Note

Composer note
One of my mentors, the venerated composer Leslie Bassett, from time to time would surprise himself with his own lyricism. A hard-bitten modernist that yet wielded a melodic and tonal hand, his Aria from Seven Preludes for Piano is a beautiful gem of seemingly contradictory aesthetic impulses. In my Kanto Kechua (Quecha Song) No. 3 for flute and piano, I weld together a brief quote from Leslie's music with re-imaginings of my own inspired by the native musics of Andean Perú, particularly its Quechua-Indian traditions.
