Programme Note
Whistle and Flute was commissioned for Rachel Brown by the Park Lane Group for the 1985 Young Artists Series with funds provided by the Arts Council of Great Britain. It is dedicated "to John G. Guy with fond memories."
The work is based upon the Turkish 'Bozlak' which appears in several forms, but has as its essence a melismatic improvisational character in the melodic line. Melodies are gradually superimposed upon one another with a refrain arising from each statement as a contemporary reflection. Turkish folk music has been inspirational to the composition in the sense that it provides a springboard for a cohesive interplay that acknowledges a tradition but avoids slavishly copying it. Four flute types are used in the tape background: piccolo, concert flute, alto and bass, with at times the addition of octave transpositions supplied by a harmonizer. The background tape was made by Rachel Brown and John Whiting.
